Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was encouraged by her aunt Denise when she was an infant. She was a night nurse to allow her aunt to have the time she needed throughout her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art, and theater. DuVernay fell in love with the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt showed it to DuVernay. DuVernay was able to see through her mother's examples of the power of art as an activist vehicle. DuVernay learned to be socially conscious through her mother. DuVernay was raised in Compton with her parents however she was able to spend the summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where DuVernay's father's family has been for generations. Her father was awed by the historic civil rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent town Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her summers in Selma and decided to make an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated with a high school diploma from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay was a college student when she became attracted to the field of production for the broadcast media. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial.
